about

This album was recorded on my phone in September of 2020. Some of the songs were "mastered" or lightly processed in Logic but then about half way through I decided that wasn't necessary and proceeded to upload tracks directly from the StudioMini app. I recorded each song in one continuous take on a single track and there are no overdubs, which is probably obvious. The criteria for inclusion was that I didn't make any mistakes that made me immediately cringe when I listened back.

Though I think I am a decent guitar player, writing lyrics and singing are not my strong suits and I hate recording. I have let these things get in the way of finishing songs pretty much since I was in middle school. When I write and record a song, I am rarely satisfied with the end result. Maybe it is the sound of the guitar, or maybe the drums don't seem good enough yet, or maybe the bridge could be better, or maybe I will come up with a great vocal hook and learn how to sing. Always something! I tell myself that I will come back and "finish" my songs later, which invariably doesn't happen. Instead, I have bits and pieces of "demos" floating around on my computer that never turn into "real" songs.

I wrote these songs at various points over the past ten years or so. Many exist in an alternate form on my computer (either an unfinished GarageBand or Logic file consisting of an electric guitar and a more or less complete MIDI drum track, possibly with some bass). I have relearned and/or reworked many of them and played them on my acoustic guitar, which is the same shitty Yamaha guitar that I got for Christmas when I was 7 or 8 that has somehow survived approximately a dozen moves in the past 25 years without a case or, really, any effort on my part to protect it. Sounds good enough! Thanks, shitty Yamaha guitar! Although I am certainly not proud of the sound of the songs on this record nor necessarily the performances, arranging them to be played in a single guitar part was fairly challenging and fun, so that's something.

All but one of the song titles are taken from the ongoing fake 7" title series my dear buddy Chris and I have had going for 6 or 7 years in our text conversation. I would like to thank Chris for allowing me to use some of *his* suggested titles, one of which I repurposed for the title of the album. I am glad they are now "real" songs.
